The 1909 Land Speed Record holder is a mighty, fire belching, 200hp, 21.5 liter engined dragon. It requires a driver of unending determination and incalculable courage. It is gigantic. It is angry. It is gorgeous.

And as some poor guy found out on the Pendine Sands of Wales, chain drive has a structural limit. Pass that limit and the chains decapitate you when they break.

I was at meadowbrook a couple of years ago and had the opportunity to watch a couple of fellas go through the impressive starting ritual. Once fired, the earth literally shook beneath my feet. The pistons must be the size of coffee cans.
